Prototyping ends the war between clients and developers

In his online book, Client vs. Developers Wars, Eric Holter explains how time commonly wasted in miscommunication during web projects can be poured into actually improving sites by incorporating prototyping into the design process. He tells the woeful tale of conflicts and negative experience, which everybody involved in web development know all too well, and shows how the power of interaction design can change the dynamics of the web design process.

The book is free for download. A must read for interaction designers.

Web Style Guide, 2nd edition

It's a big mistake that the book Web Style Guide: Basic Design Principles for Creating Web Sites by Partick J. Lynch and Sarah Horton has never been mentioned on GUUUI before now. I have had the book on the shelf since 1999 and have referred to it often. It's out in a 2nd edition from 2002.

The book is about the fundamentals of website design, and places itself somewhere between the how-to-web-design books and the how-to-user-centred-design books.

Despite its modest 176 pages, the book is very comprehensive. It covers topics such as project management, the development process, information architecture, page design, typography, editorial style, and the use of graphics and multimedia.

It's available both at the book store and online.

Palm OSŪ User Interface Guidelines

This online book describes how to design applications for Palm Powered(TM) handhelds so that they conform to Palm, Inc's user interface guidelines. Read and use it if you are an interaction designer, application designer, or a developer and you are considering creating applications that run on Palm OSŪ.

It is well know that the Palm OSŪ UI Guidelines are established through extensive fieldwork, and therefor some of these insights may provide you solutions and concepts that resolve typical problems in designing web sites and webbased applications that run on PDA's in general.
