New book on prototyping

Todd Zaki Warfel has outpaced me in my long-standing attempt to write a book on user interface prototyping. His book Prototyping - A Practitioner's Guide to Prototyping is now on sale. I haven't had the chance to read it yet (don't forget you promised me a copy, Todd), but I'll bet it's worth its price. Go get it!

iPhone paper prototype video

Here's a great video of usability test of an iPhone application from one of my prototyping workshops. Besides showing how fun paper prototyping is, it shows how paper, pen, scissor and glue stick are the tools of choice when you want to mimic advanced interactions.

Thanks to Hannu Vangsgaard who acted user during the test while filming the session on his (real) iPhone.

Sketchy Axure Widget Library

Kevin Wick has released a sketchy widget set for the prototyping tool Axure. Thanks Keven. I've been longing for that.

Review of Pidoco° - a prototyping and usability testing tool

Harry Brignull has taken a look at Pidoco°, a prototyping tool with a build-in remote usability testing tool. With the tool, you can create your prototype, invite test participants by e-mail, run your tests, and get it all on tape.

The fundamentals of interface design by Ryan Singer

In this video, Ryan Singer from 37signals gives a 30 minute talk on the fundamentals of interface design. Though it's aimed at programmers and get a bit technical towards the end, his real world examples communicates the way he approaches interface design in a clear and engaging way.

Jakob Nielsen interview by Webdesigner Depot

Webdesigner Depot has been lucky to get an interview with Jakob Nielsen himself.

Among other things, they talk about:

- How recruiting representative users is the only place you shouldn't skimp in a usability test – everything else is negotiable and can be done on the cheap.
- That even though some studies have found that many don't use breadcrumbs, Jakob finds them useful because they are lightweight design elements, harmless to those not using them.
- That it's ok with Jakob that designers make hard-to-use artistic websites when they don't serve a utilitarian purpose.

ForeUI prototyping tool

ForeUI is another prototyping tool that allows you to build functional prototypes of interactive products.

What sets this tool apart from all the others is that it's skinnable - that is, you can change the look and feel of you prototype. Currently, it provides Windows, Mac, hand-drawn and a schematic wireframe theme.

The tool runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris.

Review of online usability testing service

Konigi has a review of the online usability testing service UserTesting. It outlines how the service works, its advantages and disadvantages. The main advantages are time and money savings. The main disadvantages are that you are at the mercy of the service to follow through with your screening request and that you cannot ask follow up questions during the test sessions.
