Interaction Design Patterns

Interaction Design Patterns are descriptions of re-usable solutions to common design problems expressed in a standard format. Martijn van Welie has compiled a set of about 60 user-oriented web, GUI, and mobile patterns, making it one of the largest collections for Interaction Design. At his site you'll also find some background articles about Interaction Design Patterns.

Camtasia a screen recording application

Camtasia from TechSmith is a powerful alternative to video-recording usability test sessions. Camtasia can capture all the users' actions on the screen and, at the same time, record the spoken comments of the user and the usability facilitator. The result can be saved to a standard AVI movie file and edited with the Camtasia Producer.

Discussion list on Web Information Architecture

The SIG-IA list is a discussion group on Information Architecture. The purpose of the list is to "provide a meeting ground between those working in the newest fields of the Web and those who have been dealing with similar issues as theoreticians or information scientists." The list is a very lively forum and has loads of entries every day.

Extraordinary prototyping tool

Group for User Interface Design has developed a quite extraordinary piece of software for prototyping called DENIM, which is free for download at their web site. With the tool you sketch sitemaps, storyboards and page layout by hand and work seamlessly between the different levels of detail by zooming in on items.

Unfortunately the tool is developed for pen interaction and is very hard to use with a mouse. But if you have a pen tablet or a touch screen you might find it handy.

But check out the video presentation anyhow I bet you haven't seen an interface like this before. It's refreshing to see something that doesn't look like any other windows application at all. Thumbs up for Group for User Interface Design!

Automating diagrams with Visio

Michael Angeles describes a technique to optimize site diagramming using Visio to automatically generate a site diagram from data in Excel sheets. I tried it out but Im not convinced that this is actually faster than doing it manually in Visio. The discussion of the article shows that others have their reservations too. But it might be handy in some occasions.

Diagramming tool for information architects and interaction designers

Diagramming a Web solution's high-level structure and flow is an important initial step in Web development. Jesse James Garrett has developed a visual vocabulary specific to diagramming Web solutions. His article "A visual vocabulary for describing information architecture and interaction design" provides guidelines for the use of the vocabulary and links to downloadable shape libraries for OmniGraffle, Visio, Adobe InDesign, FreeHand, Illustrator and iGrafx.
