Rapidrabb - an online prototyping tool

Rapidrabb is an online prototyping tool that allows for real time collaboration as we know it from Google Docs. As is the standard in other prototyping tools, we can create pages and populate them with drag-and-drop widgets, link it all together, and view the whole thing live.

I haven't tested the tool thoroughly but it seems quite reasonable and fast to work with.

The mobile web trouble users

A usability study by Jakob Nielsen shows that people using websites on their mobile phones suffer from old-time usability issues, such as slow download time, bloated pages, and difficulties using the browsers.

To improve usability of mobile web browsing, Jakob Nielsen recommends that big and rich sites provide different websites tailored to each type of mobile device on the market. Sites that need to serve mobile devices but can't afford building many different versions should supplement the main site with a single scaled-back mobile-optimized design, recognizing that it will serve high-end phones poorly.

The study reveals that people have problems with all kinds of mobile devices. Even the iPhone isn't perfect, though it is, as Jakob says, "the first mobile Internet device worth criticizing."

Prototyping primer

Dave Cronin has written a great piece on prototyping interaction designs. He covers what prototype are, how prototyping aid design exploration, evaluation, communication, and construction, and how the construction of prototypes is commonly approached.

Rich interactions with Visio via VisDynamica

Tomek Seroczynski has developed a very promising extension that makes Visio capable of simulating rich interactions. The tool is currently under development. At the time being, it features:

- Dynamically loading content for simulating things like dropdown menus and tool tips
- Pop-up layers (known as lightbox the web sphere)
- A dynamic tabs widget
- Inclusion of YouTube videos

At Tomek's site, you can see a demo, download a sample Visio document, and the stencil needed to use the tool.

How removing a button can make you $300,000,000 a year

In this article, Jared Spool tells a story of how his company helped an e-commerce site increase purchases by 45%.

The site lost lots of purchases because the required customer registration frustrated people. Usability tests showed that they resented having to register and repeat customers couldn't remember their account login.

The designers fixed the problem simply. They took away the Register button and made customer registration optional. With an increased sale of $300,000,000 the first year, the client was happy.

Collection of wireframe examples

Jakub Linowski has set up a blog for sharing examples of how interaction designers document rich interactions, user flows, and web 2.0 wireframes. The site is open for contributions.

Paper prototyping stencil

Design Commission has made a cool stencil kit that makes it easier to sketch nice looking interaction designs by hand. The kit includes a metal stencil, a mechanical pencil, and a sketchpad with browser chrome and grid.

Four lo-fi prototype videos

If you browse around YouTube, you can find a good deal of videos showing how people have used lo-fi prototypes in different projects. Here are four interesting ones that I've found.
